Does child support favor only women or is child support a system that favors the children no matter who has custody? Recently a young man told me a story that I found unbelievable. He had filed for child support for his son who he has custody of and has had custody of for approximately six years. Child support had awarded this young man $15 a month from the working mother who also receives child support. Now I know this is unbelievable to you also or anyone who hears this. In defense of this situation, this young man works and pays child support for three children in the amount of a little less than $500 a month. Although this amount is not millions, it is not near $15 a month per child. I understand that child support is provided based on the income of the paying parent, but is that the truth or a fairy tale? The reason I say this is because the young man in this case is left with $200 per pay or less to take care of the other four children he has at home. He is trying and trying hard to make it. Are men being punished for fathering children? When two irresponsible people make babies, isn’t it both of their responsibility to support those children? If you agree, that the answer is yes, then why does it seem that fathers are being punished? In cases where women get welfare and food stamps, should only the men be ordered to pay back the system, when clearly they both participated in creating a situation that clearly neither one of them had the means to take care of? So when a man has custody, does that child not deserve the same consideration as if that child were with his mother? $15 a month is certainly not enough to even try to feed that child for a week. It seem when the father has the child not only is the father punished for being a father, but the child is punished also for being with the father. In today’s society, when we talk so much about discrimination, is it possible that there is gender discrimination within the child support system? Is child support in the business only of protecting mothers, or is its business to protect children from poverty, homelessness, and hunger by making sure that they are provided for? If this is the case, how could Child Support in good conscious award a child $15 a month who deserves so much more?
Why is child support bias towards men? Do single fathers deserve and need the same financial security as women? Well apparently the system we have today doesn't think so.
