Young Lives Matter is a group that was formed by Lia Johnson a local Newark native, started 4 years ago after reading " The Autobiography of Assada Shakur." One specific part stood out to her the most when the black panther party fed the less fortunate and a little boy came in without a coat or shoes. It touched her because these issues happen in our community today. That's when she came up with this great idea to make this non profit organization.
Young Lives Matter is setup to bring awareness on certain situations that happen in the community such as providing food, clothes, school supplies for children. They also do toy drives, clothes drives and packages for the homeless. Most recently they had a sickle cell awareness carnival for the children in the community.
Sickle cell is a disorder that causes red blood cells to become misshapen and break down. This event was inspired by her youngest daughter who has sickle cell anemia. She only had 3 weeks to get this event together and it turned out amazing. From the games to the giving away of plenty of clothes and shoes, no one left empty handed. She said it's like her mind goes black and her bank account goes empty but she doesn't care because there isn't a amount you can put on helping others.
The goal is to inspire at least one person and keep them on the right path. Also to give children a positive role model and influence to look up to. Young Lives Matter and Lia are both great inspirations in today's society.
